A Russian Submarine Accidently ‘Committed Suicide’ By Its Own Torpedo



The tragedy began on August 15, 2000, in the Barents Sea. The Kursk, an Oscar II-class sub built in 1994, was part of a war game involving the Russian Northern Fleet.

    I was underway on MIAMI when this occurred. We got the news about it, and then didn’t hear anything for a week. The crew was going nuts for info about what was happening. I wrote a nasty-gram to Sublant and got myself in trouble, but at least we got some news.
