In July this year, the Russian Navy finally took delivery of what is the world’s longest known submarine. The maker touts it as a research vessel, but many speculate it is a platform for espionage and possibly nuclear weapons.

 Though only about 60 feet shorter than a modern submarine, the Gato and Balao-class submarines the U.S. Navy operated in World War II had a displacement of only about one third that of modern Virginia class submarines.
